How we work

Show the work

CIVWATCH earns trust the way good reporting does: by showing sources, stating uncertainty and correcting in public.

  1. Every record links to its source

    Source document, retrieval date, last verification and change history sit on every record. A missing source is shown as missing.

  2. Verification is stated, not implied

    Verified means a primary document is on file. Reported means a secondary source. Unverified means a tip. Each state has its own label and mark.

  3. Institutions and infrastructure, never people

    We map cameras, contracts and policies. We do not access camera feeds, intercept communications, or track individuals.

  4. Corrections are public

    Anyone can report an error. Corrections are logged in the open, next to the record they change.
